This has been discussed before on other sites, yes, there is a known issue with the cracking on the dock connector portion of the backing of the 3g. Yes, Apple has authorized a service swap/exchange on this if it is under warranty, and has offered quite a bit of latitude to the genius staff/family room specialists to swap these out even if they are out of warranty. Apple has internal documentation noting this as a problem and how to address it.
Warranty concerns: It is very YMMV, but yes, even though this is out of warranty/repair coverage/apple care, yes Apple could still choose to cover it. I have received a replacement 3gs from my 3g, and so has a handful of my family. Others though, got replacement 3g iphones. The inventory is the concern.
Someone chimed in saying you have to pay 199 for a replacement. That is not 100% accurate. Here is why:
Do you have to pay 199 for a replacment? Maybe, or maybe not. It really depends on 1) who helps you 2) your previous history with apple devices (established applecare) 3) there is a bulletin from Apple directly about taking care of customer issues with this phone. AGAIN, Apple is giving quite a bit of support and discretion to hte genius and family room guys on making this call, so its up to them really.
Why this works: The 3g is low in inventory, the 3gs has been an authorized replacement.
What you wont get: An iphone 4. Sorry guys, it just isnt going to happen. Not even a manager is going to sign off on a 3g/3gs to iphone 4 upgrade.
